Robert I. Ballinger III of Philadelphia died Monday, April 30, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 68.

He was born Jan. 12, 1944, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., to the late Robert I. Ballinger Jr. — a principal in The Ballinger Company of Philadelphia and for whom the Preservation Foundation's Ballinger Award is named — and Elizabeth Mulford Ballinger of Philadelphia.

An expert on English antiques, Mr. Ballinger spent his professional life as a dealer and adviser to collectors and enthusiasts. For over 35 years, he worked for Alfred Bullard Inc. of Philadelphia, one of the premier English antique dealers in the United States.

Mr. Ballinger was a lifelong supporter of the arts and music. In Pennsylvania, he supported the Horticultural Society and the Philadelphia Zoo; he was also a member of the Philadelphia Atheneum.

He is survived by his sister Elizabeth "Wendy" Ballinger Oram of Berwyn, Pa.; nephews James Marshall Oram and Brook Ballinger Oram; grandnephews James Braiden Oram and Finnigan Ballinger Oram; and longtime companion Paul L. Starcheski of Philadelphia.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint David's Episcopal Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Road, Wayne, Pa.

Memorial donations may be sent to The Jefferson Foundation, c/o Jefferson Hospital, 925 Chestnut St. Philadelphia, PA 19107, with checks payable to Jefferson University Hospital with a memo of "Dr. Matthew J. Killion Fund for Cancer Research."
