French Actress. Symbol of the French New Wave films, she is best known for her roles in Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and Amour (2012). Born Paulette Germaine Riva, she was the only child of Jeanne Nourdin and Alfredo Riva, a sign painter who descended from an Italian family. Riva moved to Paris in 1953 to become an actress, despite opposition from her family. In 1959 she played the role of Elle in Hiroshima mon amour, directed by Alain Resnais, and in 1960 she received her first nomination for the BAFTA Award. She then appeared in Kapò (1959), Adua and her Friends, (1960), Priest (1961), Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962), Thomas the Imposter (1965), Three Colours: Blue (1993), and Venus Beauty Institute (1999). In 2013 she won the BAFTA Award and the César Award for her lead role in Amour as Anne Laurent and she was also named for the Academy Award. Riva passed away from cancer in Paris.
