Dr. Alan Foust, 77, Former Lehigh U. Dean

Dr. Alan S. Foust, 77, a former dean of Lehigh University's College of Engineering, died Thursday [20 Mar 1986] in his apartment in Westminster Village, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Aigler) Foust.

Foust retired in 1977, but remained a consultant to the university. He joined the faculty in 1952 as professor and chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering. He served as dean of the college from 1962 until 1968, when he returned to full-time teaching. He was named R.L. McCann Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Before coming to Lehigh, Foust taught at the University of Michigan for 15 years and at Texas College of Mines and the University of Texas. He also served as a chemist with the Magnolia Petroleum Co., Beaumont, Texas, and as a development engineer with the Texas Pacific Coal & Oil Co., Fort Worth, Texas.

Born in Dublin, Texas, he was a son of the late Charles G. [Foust] and Carrie (Lattimore) Foust.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan.

Foust was senior author of a book, "Principles of Unity Operations."

Since 1971 he served as chairman of a committee of consultants advising the operating contractors for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration's Hanford Works in Washington state on management, processing and storage of nuclear wastes.

He received the R.R. and E.C. Hillman Award in 1961 for outstanding contributions and advancing the interests of the university, and received the special Sesquicentennial Award for distinguished service to the University of Michigan in 1967.

Foust was a member of the First Baptist Church, Dublin, Texas.

He served in the Army during World War II and received the Legion of Merit Award.

Surviving are two sons, Alan S. Jr. of Stavanger, Norway, and C. William of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Hoppe of Bethlehem and Mrs. Carolyn Klebe of Hampton, Iowa; a brother, J. Mack [Foust] of Sun City, Ariz., and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, Bethlehem. There will be no calling hours.

The Snyder-Hinkle Funeral Home, 527 Center St., Bethlehem, is handling arrangements.
