"Confederate Pvt. Rodolphus Amos came to East Tennessee with the 6th Georgia Cavalry in 1863. He never left. His granddaughter showed up in Loudon County more than 130 years later trying to find Amos' grave. Everyone pointed her to Gerald Augustus, a retired principal and writer of a book on the county's Civil War history. Augustus knew just the place. Amos died in January 1864 of wounds suffered three months earlier at the Battle of Philadelphia in what's now southern Loudon County {TN}. A local family, the Kerrs, had taken him in, tried to nurse him back to health and finally buried him beside the nearby railroad tracks. 'They buried him there in the hope that somebody from Georgia would pass through, see the marker and take him back home.' Augustus said. 'Nobody did.'"
