Having take off from RAF Cranage in Cheshire, 96 RAF Squadron’s Boulton Paul Defiant Mk I #N3447 aircraft was on a military night flight when it collided in mid-air with another of 96 Squadron’s Defiant aircraft, #N3447; N3447 crashed near Whitegate, taking the lives of its two aircrew members. The aircrew of N3447 were uninjured in the collision.
The two airmen who perished were-
RAFVR Flight Sergeant Frederick Augustus ALLCROFT and
RAF Pilot Officer John Rodger DUNCAN.
