She often went by her middle name of Catherine. She was the daughter of Peter Snyder Jr. and Hannah Cook. She was named after her younger sister Leah who died on April 14, 1835, at the age of 13.

She married Christian Christopher Whistler, on Feb. 22, 1854. He was known as "C.C." and he was the son of William Whistler. C.C. worked as a tanner.

Leah and Christian had eight children:

Clarence I. (born 2-24-1856)
William H. (born 9-10-1857)
Jennie (born 9-9-1858)
Elmer E. (born 5-15-1862)
Emma Kate (born 1-18-1864)
Charles S. (boen 5-28-1868)
George O. (born 8-17-1870)
Elsie H. (born 9-8-1872)

The family first moved to Indiana, and then they moved to Shelby County, Iowa. Lena died there, and she was probably buried on their farm. Her husband was so upset that he could no longer take care of the children, and so they were farmed out to other families to raise.
