Robert (Bob) David Nelson Sr., 81, of Coleman, died Saturday Dec. 27, 2003 at the Mid Michigan Medical Center, Midland.
Funeral and committal services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003 from the O'Laughlin Funeral Home, Inc. Burial will take place in the North Star Cemetery, Ithaca. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday an on Tuesday starting at 10 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Coleman Area Library.
He was born May 31, 1922, in Belding, the son of Charles and Julia (Epke) Nelson. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1940 and entered the U.S. Army serving in the European Theater during World War II.
He married Maxine Stone March 30, 1946, in St. Johns. They lived in Ithaca, moving to Coleman in 1956. Bob was a lifetime farmer and was employed at the Dow Chemical Co. from 1966 until his retirement in 1982 as the 1,000th retiree of the Michigan Division. He also drove bus for the Coleman Community Schools.
Bob was a member of the Coleman VFW Post 1071. He liked to spend time at his cabin in the Upper Peninsula and was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved cats and dogs. He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially gardening and lawn care. He was an enthusiastic storyteller and will be remembered for his sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Maxine, of Coleman; children Russell Nelson of Rexton, Sandra (Wendell) Galgoci of Coleman, Randy (Janette) Nelson of Sanford, Robert (Gale) Nelson Jr. of Coleman; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers Rick Caswell of Sheridan, Tom Siebert of Ontario and sister Helen Brucey of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Nelson and brothers Bill and Jack Caswell.
