Joe Velasquez, 68, passed away on Jan. 21, 2017, at Montrose Memorial Hospital.

Joe Albert Velasquez, Jr. was born on Dec. 16, 1948, in Saguache, Colorado, to parents, Jose Alberto Sr. and Maria Antonia (Sena) Velasquez. He attended schools in Monte Vista and then moved to Montrose in his teens to work.

Since education was important him, into his 30s he worked hard to proudly receive his GED. Joe married Dora Diana Garduno on April 6, 1969, in Montrose, Colorado. Joe and Dora built a loving home for their family.

Joe was the proud owner of JV Coal Company and serviced many loyal customers with whom he made friends. He was a spiritual, giving man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was friendly, loving and never met a stranger. Joe also enjoyed playing slot machines, listening to music, the outdoors and fishing. He was richly loved and will be greatly missed.

Joe is survived by his adoring family, including his wife, Dora Velasquez of the family home in Montrose, Colorado; children, Matthew Jose Velasquez and wife, Jennifer Lynn of Whitewater; Mindy Velasquez and Angel Velasquez of Montrose, Colorado; grandchildren, Nevaeh Marie, Lucas Anthony and Lorenzo Joe; brothers, John Velasquez, Raymond Velasquez, Jack Velasquez; sister, Mary Aguilar of Monte Vista, Colorado; nephew, Jose Guadalupe Gallegos of Grand Junction, Colorado; uncles, John Velasquez, Ernie Velasquez; aunts, Julia Martinez, Irene Thompson, Tillie Velasquez and Henrietta Velasquez. He is also survived by his in-laws whom he loved as his own: Robert Garduno, Dominica Jacquez, Joe Garduno, Teresa Snow, Susie Garduno, Sara Garduno Steve Garduno, Frances Vigil; as well as many “adopted” children, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

A visitation for family and friends will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors. A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at the funeral home; interment will follow at Cedar Creek Cemetery, east of Montrose. Following the graveside a reception will conclude the services at Signature Events, next to the funeral home.
