A number of records suggest his middle name was McFarland (hence the nickname "Mack"). See, for example, 1880 census, where he is called "McFarlin"; 1900 and 1920 census records, where he is called "McFarland"; Indiana death certificate for daughter Ethel, where he is called "MacFarlan"; his Michigan marriage record (with Cora), where he is called "McFarland"; Ohio marriage record for Ethel, where he is called "McFarland Hampton"; US City DIrectories (1909 in Marion, Marion, OH), where he is called "McFarland H."; and SSA Applications and Claims Index for Ethel, where he is called "McFarland H." Hence I have suggested that the "M" is for "McFarland". Frankly, I'm not sure if that was his first name (as it is suggested in the above examples) or his middle name (as on the grave stone).
