Charles Ray "Chazz" Jones November 11, 2014 Charles Ray "Chazz" Jones, age 87 and resident of Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, died November 11, 2014. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC to Sanford Greeley Jones and Lillie Maye Vogler Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Darlene Caudle Jones, as well as all eight of his siblings. After serving 2 years in the U.S. Navy, Ray entered Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, graduating with a degree in Radiological Technology. After graduation, he and Darlene settled in Chapel Hill, and Ray began a 30 year career as an X-Ray Technician with the V.A. Hospital in Durham, NC. A lifelong Tarheel fan, Ray especially enjoyed family gatherings and UNC basketball. With his wife, Darlene, he was a devoted and active member of University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, and took part in many church events, professing his faith and delighting in the time spent with friends. Ray was also a skilled gardener who reliably produced the ripest and sweetest tomatoes as early as June, year after year. Long before the local food movement, Ray was composting mountains of leaves and using natural methods to produce a bounty of fresh produce for friends, neighbors, and local wildlife. Ray and Darlene also loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many corners of the globe, including Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, British Columbia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Switzerland, the country from which his mother's family descended. Known for years as "Ray", Dad took the name of "Chazz" upon his move to Carolina Meadows, stating that his early name was Darlene's alone and that a new name was needed for a new chapter of life. Ray ("Chazz") leaves behind his loving daughter, Jenifer Jones of Charlotte NC and sister-in-law Gloria Caudle, of Advance NC, who were by his side during his final hours. Ray also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and family by marriage who will miss him dearly, and a lifetime of friends and neighbors in Chapel Hill who kept "Chazz" active and engaged during his later years. A special thank you to the staff of Carolina Meadows who loved Dad like family and spoke often of his ever-present smile. Ray will be interred at Forsyth Memorial Cemetery in Winston-Salem beside his darling Darlene in a graveside celebration of his life, date to be determined.
