Charles (Chuck) Spangler, Jr.
October 7, 1926 - January 24, 2017
Charles (Chuck) Spangler, Jr., of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 24th, 2017 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles, Sr. and Lola Belle Amos Spangler; a brother, George Wesley Spangler; and sisters Kathryn Spangler Secrist and Bettie Jean Spangler Woodson Streifel. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley Bennen Spangler; a daughter, Kathryn Tompkins and her husband Rollin; three sons, Wesley and his wife Karen, Steven and his wife Beth and John and his wife Sharon. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Tami Cox, Geoffrey Tompkins, Kasey Tompkins, Annie Spangler, Ethan Spangler, Aaron Spangler, Reid Spangler, Rose Spangler and Molly Spangler; and three great-grandchildren, Alice Gumuski, Lauren Cox and Kaelynn Schaffer.
A native of Roanoke, VA, Chuck was a member of the Jefferson High School class of 1945. Following his graduation he entered the Army Air Corps, (later the U.S. Air Force) where he served in several locations in the United States and later in Germany and Austria. He received an honorable discharge from Langley Field, Virginia in 1948.
Chuck attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and received a degree in Psychology in 1953. He began his career as a Case Worker at the Training School for Boys in Gatesville, TX. His career in business began with Phillips Petroleum Company in McGregor, TX. He had a lengthy career in human resources with companies including Riegel Paper, Miles Laboratories, JC Penney, Celanese Chemical, Sandoz Pharmaceutical and Allied Chemical. Most recently he served as a contract consultant for Lee Hecht Harrison in the field of outplacement.
During the 35 years he lived in New Jersey, he was involved in numerous volunteer and government organizations. He served as the first elected Mayor of Mt. Olive Township, NJ and also served several terms on the Township Council. He was Chairman of the Mt. Olive Board of Health and the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, President of the Mt. Olive Education Foundation, President of the New Jersey Society of Training Directors, and Chairman of the New Jersey Placement Directors. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of Dover (NJ) General Hospital.
While living in New Jersey, he was a member of Hope Baptist Church. He returned to Roanoke, VA in 2003, where he became a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church. In both churches he served as a deacon, Bible Teacher, fundraiser for building expansion and on numerous committees.
A memorial service will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel on Friday, January 27th, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel Palmer officiating. Visitation will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2017.
The family greatly appreciates the ministry of Home Instead Senior Care and Medi Home Health and Hospice. Chuck will especially be missed by his “Buddy” and Caregiver of almost three years, Ron Leftwitch.
In lieu of flowers the family requests you consider a memorial contribution to the North Roanoke Baptist Church Building Fund.
