Jimmy Levern Matthews was born in Salters, Williamsburg County, South Carolina on June 24, 1956 to the late Horace Wilson and Elizabeth Scott Wilson. His mother died when he was infant and Jimmy was adopted by James and Ella Mae Matthews and was raised in the Heineman community of Salters. He departed this life at 11:15AM on Monday, January 23, 2017 at McLeod Hospital after suffering for many years with hypertension and a heart condition.
Jimmy was educated in the Public school system of Williamsburg County and was a 1974 graduate of C. E. Murray High School. After graduation Jimmy enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1976 with the rank of Pvt.
He began his working career as a custodian at C. E. Murray High School and after holding various jobs throughout his lifetime eventually found the job for which he was best suited. With the assistance of his longtime friend and mentor, the late German Glascho, Jimmy became Resident Manager/Administrator of My House Community Home located in the Sandy Bay community of Kingstree, SC. This job he held until the death of Glascho in May of 2015.
At an early age, Jimmy joined and attended Union Missionary Baptist Church in Salters with his mother.
Jimmy was a lover of baseball. This hobby he inherited honestly since his father and uncles were devoted baseball fans and players attending all the games in and around the surrounding communities.
Years ago, Jimmy met the love of his life, Shirley McKnight and was instrumental in helping her to raise her three children, Chris McKnight, Carlon McKnight and Patricia Major, as well as her eight grandchildren.
In addition to his biological and adoptive parents, Jimmy had three siblings to precede him in death - Eddie Wilson, Sara Jane Wilson and Mary Elizabeth Wilson.
Loved ones to cherish his memories and mourn his passing are his longtime companion, Shirley McKnight of Salters, SC; his loving and devoted sister, Dorothy (Isaac) Wilson McClary; his cousin, who was like his Big Brother and one of his caregivers, Rufus (Lossie) Matthews of Salters, SC; a special aunt, Hessie Lee Keels of Greeleyville.
