Vera B. Woods passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. She was 94, born January 21, 1916 in Merritt, B.C. to Jesse and Freda (Osthoff) Bradley. Even though she was an only child, she grew up surrounded by 24 first cousins. Vera grew up in a logging camp in Eastern Washington and went to a one room school in Mallott. She graduated from Omak High School in 1934. Vera was always a great student and was well-liked by her classmates in school. She was voted "Princess Omak", her senior year of high school in Omak, Washington for the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival. Vera graduated from Central Washington State College to begin a career in teaching. She began her career in Woodland, Idaho. Vera taught elementary grades for 34 years in the Pasco, Kirkland, Lynden and Bellingham school districts. Soon after World War II, at a dance in Kirkland, Vera met a lieutenant in the Navy, James E. Woods, who was from Texas. They were married in Dallas, TX on August 24, 1946. Vera was a member of the First Congregational Church in Bellingham. She was an avid reader, loved working crossword puzzles, playing pinochle, dancing to music of the 30's and 40's, laughing with and teasing her "favorite and only son-in-law", and making the best meringue and pecan pies. She is survived by her loving husband Jim; daughter Sandy and husband Fred Olsen; grandson Scott and wife Erin Olsen; and a soon-to-be great-grandson. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Oris Woods in Kilgore, TX; several nieces and a nephew. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Whatcom or Alternative Humane Society. Private family services will be held.
