Samuel Joseph Gilbert, 57, of Morristown, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and many friends. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; a devoted son, uncle, brother and friend. He was a longtime farmer of the Lowland Community and a faithful member of Morningside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, James T. Gilbert; father-in-law, Rush H. Johnson; grandparents; and an infant nephew.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Tracy Johnson Gilbert; son, Clinton (Ashley) Gilbert; daughters, Samantha and Katy Beth Gilbert; granddaughter, Ansleigh Jo Gilbert; mother, Edith Harville Gilbert; brothers, Eddie (Marty) Gilbert, Gary (Sandy) Gilbert, Mike (Betty) Gilbert and Tim (Gail) Bacon; mother-in-law, Marjorie Johnson; sister-in-law, Cindy Collins; brother-in-law, Ted (Sonya) Johnson; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ward Phillips, Dr. Mitch Martin, Tennessee Cancer Specialists, special nurses, Wanda Harmon and Sarah France and Avalon Hospice Care.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 at Morningside Baptist Church and the funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. with the Reverends Ross Woody and Tommy Seals officiating.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24 at St. Paul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Morningside Baptist Church Building Fund, 2202 Chestnut Ave. Morristown, TN 37813 or to the St. Paul Cemetery Trust, P.O. Box 1674 Morristown, TN 37816.
