1850 U.S. Federal Census - Reel #665, page 257B: The John M. Butcher family is shown residing in North Lewisburg (Lewisburg)Champaign County, Ohio. His age was 34, and occupation is shown as physician. Nancy age 26; James M., age 12; Malissa J., age 10; Elizabeth A., age 6, and John C., age 4.

1860 U.S. Federal Census - Reel # 942, page 19, Series M653: The Butcher family is shown residing in North Lewisburg (Lewisburgh)Champaign County, Ohio. John M. Butcher's age was 42, and occupation is shown as phsycian. Nancy age 35; male, J. M. S., age 22, occupation listed as "teacher of penmanship"; female, M. J., age 20, occupation listed as "school teacher"; female, E. A., age 17; male, J. C., age 15; and Minerva Helms, age 4.

1880 U.S. Federal Census – NA Film #T9-998, Family History Film # 1254998, page 420C, ED31, Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio:
John M. Butcher, age 63; wife Nancy, age 56; and a servant.

John and Nancy Butcher also appear on page 95 of the "Nixon & Bolton" book under the cemetery listing entitled "Spain Cemetery and the North Lewisburg Cemetery" which incorrectly combined records of the Butcher and "Spain" Cemeteries.

The tall, black granite replacement headstone for John and Nancy Butcher stands prominently in the middle of the Butcher Cemetery with the one line verse of "He is not dead."

Page 559 of the book "A Biographical History of Champaign County, Ohio" by the Lewis Publishing Company, 1902, contains a biographical account of the life of Dr. John C. Butcher, son of Dr. John (J.M.S.) and Nancy Jane (Brock) Butcher. A paragraph is devoted to the life of the elder Dr, Butcher and his wife, "…He was one of the pioneer physicians of Ohio … locating in Belmont County, when he later moved to Champaign County, locating at North Lewisburg." In an August 1894 interview with Rev. Edward C. Young of the North Lewisburg Friends Church, he said, "Dr. Butcher is not a Friend but an aggressive man and important helper." On page 20 of the book, "Will Abstracts of Champaign County, Ohio Vol II, Books G thru L 1889 – 1911, abstracted by Pat Stickley in 1996, and published by the Champaign County Genealogical Society: "PG 289 JOHN M. BUTCHER Probated 15 JAN 1891 Urbana, (died 6 JAN 1891) Heirs – Nancy Butcher-widow; J C Butcher – son – Urbana; Melissa B. Wagstaff –dau – North Lewisburg; Milton B. Wagstaff – grson my gold headed cane. All estate to wife Nancy Butcher and at her death ½ to son John C. Butcher and ½ to dau Melissa Wagstaff. Friend Thomas D. Crow executor; Witnesses: R E Gross, Ada Morris and Flora Davis will signed ----- 1888"

Per the Butcher Family Bible in the possession of Mr. Stephen Smith's mother, John Milton Butcher was born on September 23, 1816. His parents were Jeremiah and Hannah Butcher.

Dr. John Milton Butcher was married twice. First, to Mary Ann Johnson who was born on December 15, 1816. They married on December 8, 1836. Mary Anne Johnson Butcher died on February 10, 1842. On February 23, 1843, Dr. John Milton Butcher married Nancy Brock who was born on September 22, 1823. Nancy Brock Butcher died on August 8, 1898.
