While at Byrd High School, Frank participated in R.O.T.C., and, after his graduation from LSU, he joined the Louisiana National Guard with a commission as Second Lieutenant in the 204th Coast Artillery Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), reporting to Camp Hulen near Palacios, Texas. With the onset of WWII, the 204th was ordered to Camp Pennington, California, from which he was sent to Fort Bliss, “in cadre” to form the Thirty-third Coast Artillery Battalion under the commanding officer, Colonel Claude Dance, also of Shreveport. The new Thirty-third soon left from Fort Dix, New Jersey, headed to Casablanca on the SS Andes.
Frank continued his service during WWII, spending three years on overseas duty in Rabat, Morocco; Algiers, Algeria; and Sardinia before the Thirty-third finally entered France at Marseille, as part of the advance to the Rhine, continuing on to Munich, Germany, where he was stationed when the unconditional surrender of all German forces to the Allies was signed on May 7, 1945. Upon his return home to the States via the SS Argentina in early 1946, Frank was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
Over the next several years, Frank worked at KTBS-Radio in Shreveport and KPDR-Radio in Alexandria, La., after which he and his father and brother, Bill, opened the fourth new radio station in Shreveport – KENT. Many years later, they sold their station and Frank began a new chapter in his professional career, entering the insurance business. Soon thereafter, he founded his own agency, which he operated for 15 years and 15 days, then joining AFLAC and remaining an active insurance representative with that company for 45 years! At 98 years of age, Frank still maintained current insurance licensure, and continued making sales with the teamwork of his District Manager.
Preceding Frank in death were his parents, Frank, Sr. and Amanda Ford; his sister, Dorothy, and her husband, General Gabriel P. Disosway; his brother, William (Bill) F. Ford, and his wife, Susan Lewis Ford. Frank is survived by his wife of 69 years, Sue Jackson Ford; daughters, Catherine Ford of Marble Falls, Texas; Amanda Ford McFarland and Betsy Louise Ford of Shreveport, and grandson Ananda Chaffee Ford and great-grandson Jackson Wayne Ford of Austin, Texas.
