William was an adventurer, attorney, chaplain and pastor of Congregational churches. A biography is found in Kenneth E. Lawson, Vermont Chaplains in the Civil War (Derby VT Historical Society, 2015), pp. 72-78.

He was elected trustee of Middlebury College in 1890 and a later published catalog of Middlebury officers gives a sketch of his life: "REV. WILLIAM STEVENSON SMART, D. D., son of John Gardiner and Anna Maria (Stevenson) Smart. Born in Johnstown, N. Y., March 10, 1833. Stud;ent, Washington Academy, Cambridge, N. Y. Studied law in San Francisco, Cal., 1854. Admitted to the bar, 1856. Practiced law in San Francisco and edited a newspaper in Weaverville, Cal. Clerk, U. S. Court, San Francisco, 1856. Lawyer, Xenia, O., 1857. Studied theology, Xenia Theological Seminary, 1857-1858; Union Theological Seminary, 1859-1860. Ordained, 1861. Chaplain, 14th Vt. Vols., 1862-1863. Pastor, First Church, Albany, N. Y., 1867-1889; Brandon, Vt., 1889-1905. Corporate member, A. B. C. F. M. Married Sarah Juliet Chipman, Sept. 8, 1858. Children: Isaac Chipman; Francis W.; William Stevenson. D. D., Union. Died in Burlington, Vt., April 29 1912."

Because some creators of memorials will not link to an unknown burial such as presently exists for the Rev. Mr. Smart, those for his children are:
Isaac Chipman Smart #96880630
Francis Wardale Smart #43945943
William Stevenson Smart, Jr. #118445349
