ELKHART - Stephen E. Platt, 71, of Elkhart, died Friday, January 20, 2017 at Elkhart General Hospital.

Stephen was born on May 24, 1945 in Logansport, IN, to Preston and Maxine (Cline) Platt.

He graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1963 and Valparaiso University in 1967. During his high school and college years he excelled as an athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. While attending Valparaiso University, Stephen was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and served as president during his senior year. He graduated from Valparaiso Law School in 1970.

Moving to Elkhart in 1970, he practiced law until 1978, when he was appointed to Elkhart Superior Court 5 (formerly County Court) and became a sitting judge. Stephen served as a Superior Court judge for 28 years before retiring in 2006. He also served as a Senior Judge in Elkhart and St. Joseph counties from 2007 until his death.

He was a member of the Elkhart Bar Association, Indiana Bar Association, Indiana Judges' Association, and the National Judges' Association. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, to include singing in the choir, and participating in Bible Study Fellowship International. After moving to Elkhart, he joined the Elks Club. He also played on the men's softball team, Elkhart Legal Eagles, winning the State League Championship in 1986.

As an active member of the Elkhart community, he served on the Board of Directors for Family and Children's Service of Elkhart County for 20 years. He also volunteered with local youth and young adult programs, serving as an Optimist Club Youth Oratorical Contest judge, a YMCA basketball and soccer coach, a Supervisory Judge for the Teen Court Educational Program, and presiding over Moot Court sessions for Notre Dame law students.

He is survived by Kathleen (nee Gerken), his wife of 48 years. Stephen is also survived by his son, S. Justin Platt (Cathy) Burke, VA; daughters, Heather Platt, Elkhart, and Rebecca Czirjak (Dan), Charlottesville, VA; Five grandchildren, and a sister, Terri, Indianapolis, IN.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Tish Bailey.

Friends may call from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, January 26, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkhart. Burial will take place at 1 p.m., Friday, January 27, 2017 at Pilgrim's Home Cemetery in Arcadia, Michigan.
