Daniel Augustus was born to the union of Ethel Mae Whitely and Augustus Underwood on March 19, 1930. At age 15, Dan left high school and joined the United States Army receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1948.

He joined the Church of Our Prayer in Detroit, Michigan and became a member of the 350 voice choir under the direction of the late Professor Charles Ashley Craig. He was also part of the Lofton Aires, singing with Rev. Charles Ashley Craig, Hulah Gene Dunklin Hurley, Jimmy Mitchell and Pinkie Smith.
Dan left the church to re-enlist in the United States Air Force and was Honorably Discharged in 1953.
Upon returning to Detroit, he returned to the Church of Our Prayer choir and the Lofton Aires. He helped in building the church which was located at 104 Elliott.

In 1957, Dan joined the Prince of Peace Baptist Church and became the Director of the Young People's Choir. Later, he was appointed to the position of Minister of Music, serving the church for 26 years. There he met Ivory Sawyer and the two were united in holy matrimony on December 14, 1957. To this union three children were born, Sheree, Daniel, Jr. and Karen.

Dan was employed for many years in sales and marketing and was the first African American Driver for the Vernor's Ginger Ale Company and was Vice-President of the local union.

Dan was active with the Gospel Music Workshop of America since it's inception and served as Chairman of the Business and Professional Guild and served as Stage Manager at the nightly musicals. It was in 1990 when Dan formed his own Company, "Glory Bound Disk International", an independent gospel promotional company. As an independent gospel promoter, Dan promoted such prominent gospel artists as: Take 6, Ben Tankard, The East Coast Mass Choir, The Willard Hines singers, The Mt. Ephriam Choir of Alabama featuring Donald Vails, Ortheia Barnes, Richard Smallwood, Kirk Franklin, and many other recording artists. Additionally, he did promotional work for the Crystal Rose Record Company, Popes Record Group, Mustard Seed Records, DuRohnman Records, Meek Records, Platinnum Disk Records, Sound of Gospel Record Company and many others.

In 1991, Dan initiated, founded, and organized the New Artist and Manufacturers Showcase which was presented each year during the Gospel Music Workshop Convention. He expressed the desire to have a venue in GMWA where new artist could be heard during the convention. The showcase gave rise to the careers of such artists as John P. Kee and Kirk Franklin. His genuine love for people and his radiant personality enabled him to persuage radio station Gospel Announcers to air new recording artists promoted by his company as well as those on national record labels.

Dan received many awards and commendations throughout his career as follows:
