Marcelene enjoyed the dear companionship of two brothers and two sisters: the late Mitchell Simmons of Coronado, California; the late Lois Walker of Statesville, North Carolina; Roger Simmons of Wilmington, North Carolina and Kathleen Edwards of Fredericksburg, Virginia. Marcelene was valedictorian and treasurer of her Pilot Mountain High School class and organized the school's very first Senior Skip Day. She went on to attend Meredith College in Raleigh where she managed The Bee Hive. While in Raleigh, she met her first husband, the late James Leonidas Penny. She graduated from Meredith with a BS degree in math. She and James had two daughters: Linda and Lisa. James met with an untimely demise in 1962 after they were married for fourteen years. Marcelene went to electrolysis school in 1966 and opened a practice in her physician husband's office. She was a charter member of The Electrolysis Association of North Carolina and was instrumental in gaining licensure for Electrologists in the state of North Carolina . She practiced electrolysis, permanent hair removal, with her daughter, Linda who entered the practice in 1976. Marcelene retired from Ogburn and Smith Electrolysis in 2006.

She is survived by her two daughters: Linda Penny Smith and Lisa Penny Taylor and son in law William Jake Taylor, a granddaughter, Angela Nikkol Ortiz and her husband Manuel DeJesus Ortiz, Jr. , a grandson Jeffrey Grayson Taylor and his wife Lindsey Bledsoe Taylor and a grandson Adam Brant Taylor. Her granddaughter fondly called her "GG" while her grandsons fondly called her "Mama Love". Marcelene is also survived by two great grandsons: Tanis Drake Ortiz and Talon McBryde Ortiz who fondly called her "GG Ma". The family would also like to acknowledge the special relationship Marcelene had with her former son in law, Emmett Smith and his wife Leslie and special family friend Pamela Herring Cunningham. The family wishes to express it's deepest appreciation to the Oaks at Mayview for the excellent care Marcelene received while a resident of their Memory Care Unit.

In honor of our beloved mother, Linda and Lisa sincerely request that in lieu of flowers, you perform a deed of kindness for someone in need whether it be monetary or service oriented. A small private memorial service is planned for the family.
