After Bob graduated from high school in 1946, he entered Vincennes University graduating with an A. S. degree in 1948. He enrolled at the University of Illinois graduating with a major in psychology in 1951. His National Guard 44th Division was activated into federal service and Bob was assigned to Korea. Bob was awarded the bronze star medal for heroic achievement against an enemy.
Upon his return to the United States he found that jobs were very scarce for industrial psychologist (his degree). He then accepted a sales position with the Quaker Oats Company in St. Louis, Missouri. One of his stops was to Dixon, Missouri where he met Miona (Oney) Crane. They married on February 19, 1955 in Christ Episcopal Church in Rolla, Missouri.
In Springfield, Bob and Oney were in the real estate business. The Armstrong's were very happy to be able to assist many people with purchasing their first homes, forming lasting friendships with many of them. They were very active members of St. John's Episcopal Church from the moment they arrived in Springfield. In 2009, they moved to Friendswood.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Miona Armstrong. He is survived by his sons, Charles H. Armstrong and wife Karen, Robert E. Armstrong, Jr. and wife Paula, Andrew C. Armstrong, daughter Rebecca Armstrong Peebles and husband Thomas, grandchildren, Victoria Armstrong, Elizabeth Armstrong McMillan and husband Frank, Mitchell Armstrong, Nicholas Armstrong, and Julia Armstrong, nieces and nephews, Jan Franks, Linda Diane Miller, Norva Fisher, Ron Negley, and Phil Negley.
He was a member of the American Legion in Springfield and was a 64 year member in the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois.
Burial in the Dixon Cemetery.
