Mary was born on Jan. 9, 1921, in a farm house in rural Hull, Ill., to Oscar L. and Frances Rose Stolte Howarth. Mary was the last child in her family born at home.

Mary was married to Woodrow McKee "Mac" Hammock on April 11, 1944, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hannibal, MO. He preceded her in death.

Also preceding Mary in death were her parents, five brothers, Lawrence J. Howarth (Mildred), Roy F. Howarth (Olive), Bernard E. Howarth (Ruby Lee), Louis D. Howarth and Leo E. Howarth; two special cousins that were raised with Mary, Harold J. Stolte (Helen) and Alice Stolte Wilde (Syl); and three sons in law, Clifford W. Cramlett, Richard J. "Jeff" Dunker and Lee J. Viorel Jr.

Survivors include four children, Mary Ann Viorel, W.L. "Larry" Hammock, Marsha G. Cramlett and Barbara J. Barnes (Jim); three sisters in law, Norma Beilsmith, Fern Schenck and Delores Howarth; 10 grandchildren, Lee J. Viorel III (Julie), Elizabeth McIntyre (Donlee), Jennifer Hilbert (Dave), Jeanne McClelland (Shane), Steven Viorel, Sara Hooley (Chris), Christine Campbell, Richard Dunker, Randy Dunker (Sara), and W. J. "Bill" Hammock; three stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren, four stepgreat-great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews that considered Mary as their second mother and special aunt.

Mary attended McCooey School in Hannibal, Mo. Many will remember Mary as the spunky owner and operator of Mary's Stand in East Hannibal, Ill. The stand was a fixture in the area for its 57 years of operation. Mary loved people and was the perfect saleswoman. Whether selecting flowers or picking out the perfect cantaloupe for a customer Mary loved her work. Mary learned her craft at a young age going to town with her father as a child and helping him sell eggs and butter in town.

Mary also previously sold Stanley Home Products.

Away from work Mary simply loved being outside. She enjoyed planting flowers, mushroom hunting, and fishing in her younger years. Hardworking and determined Mary passed on these values to her grandchildren often teaching them life lessons while they worked with her at the stand. Talented in the kitchen Mary made the best homemade noodles, often served at family gatherings. Mary cherished her family and loved to host gatherings around the holidays, whether Christmas, Easter or Thanksgiving, Mary simply enjoyed having everyone together. Halloween happened to be one of her favorite times of year, often enjoying seeing all of the children in their costumes.

Proud of her roots Mary loved to take drives to check on the crops or see the countryside. Feisty in nature at times, Mary was a compassionate soul that always looked for ways to help others. Many times she helped weary travelers or others passing by her stand with a meal or a place to stay.

Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be Richard P. Dunker, Lee J. Viorel III, W.J. "Bill" Hammock, Dave Hilbert, Randall S. Dunker, Steven Viorel, Donlee McIntyre, Christopher Hooley and Shane McClelland.
