The family of Florence Jeannine (North) Cooper, 83, announces the passing of this special woman on January 20, 2017 at her home in Toledo Township, KS. She will be missed.

She was born to Stanley Jackson and Lucile Virginia (Albin) North on July 29, 1933 in their home on the Chase/Lyon County Line Road, two miles east of Saffordville. She started school at Pleasant Hill Grade School, but transferred to Saffordville Grade School when her folks moved to that community. She graduated from Toledo Township High School in 1950.

Jeannine attended Kansas State Teachers College for one year and then worked for two years at the Kansas Methodist Home for Children in Newton, KS. She served as secretary, tutor, and accompanied the Home’s choir when they sang at various events.

On May 24, 1953 she married Edgar Vinson (Puncher) Cooper of Grandview. They moved to San Diego, CA to live while he finished his tour of duty in the Navy. In 1955, they moved back and lived in the Saffordville area raising kids, horses, crops and helping neighbors the rest of their lives.

Music was a part of her life since childhood. She led the choir and played the organ and piano for the services at Saffordville United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Jeannine played at numerous gathering, weddings, Christmas programs and funerals. She gave piano lessons and played at the rest homes in this area.

She wrote a column with the local news for the Chase County Leader News for several years. She was employed at the Chase County Nursing Center as an aid and then as Social Director for 10 years. She worked at Newman Regional Health for 15 years before retiring in 2004. For over 25 years Puncher, Jeannine and their family and friends held the annual production sale of foundation bred quarter horses.

She is survived by her children: Nancy (Joe) Holland of Redlands, CA, Janet (Larry) Cannon of Emporia, Wanda (Carey) Macy of Alta Vista and James (Michielle) Cooper of Emporia; her sister, Corinne (Hank) Wilson of Emporia; sister-in-law, Ann North of Cottonwood Falls; local cousins, Edith Garrison of Saffordville and Robert (Jolynn) Sweet of Emporia; 11 grandchildren: Benjamin Holland, Daniel Holland, Dakoka (Sylvia) Whitaker, Cheyann Whitaker, Denver (Jennifer) Whitaker, Cory (Jessica) Cannon, April (Joe) Tucker, Angela (John) Parriott, Cody Cannon, Colter (Megan) Macy, and Coy (Geneva) Macy; 16 great-grandchildren: Daniel Whitaker, India, Dakota, and Ireland Swain-Whitaker, Cooper and Caitlynn Whitaker, Kaden Bender, Joseph, Alexandria, and Camden Cannon, EV Cannon and Brooklyn Tucker, Wyatt Parriott, Castan and Cutter Macy, and Cambrie Macy; one aunt, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by Puncher, her husband of over 50 years; her parents and second mom, Mildred I. (Sweet) North; her brother, William Thomas (Bill) North; one daughter, Lu-beth Cooper Whitaker and one niece, Lisa Ann Wilson Miller.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, 11:00 at the Saffordville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Toledo Township.

A visitation will be held Friday, from 6-7:30 at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home.
