William was the son of William T. and Etha Atchley of Sofia, New Mexico. Identified siblings were: Albert E. and Jemmine Atchley (1940 Census). Other identified siblings were: Alva G., Bordean, Leslie, Forrest, and Violet.

On 2 Sep 1942, William T. Atchley Jr. (B: 1920, New Mexico), of Union County, enlisted as a Private in Santa Fe. He was described as single, 5 feet 9 inches, 131 pounds, and a farm hand (WWII Enlistments). He served with the 98th Bomber Squadron, 11th Bomber Group, 7th Air Force. He was declared missing in action. His mother was identified as Etha B. Atchley of Grenville, New Mexico who ordered his cenotaph monument on 11 Apr 1960 (Burial Card).

The 11th Bomber Group, flying B-17 Flying Fortresses, attacked Japanese airfields, installations, and shipping in the Solomons, until late in Mar 1943. The Group returned
to Hawaii and was reassigned to 7th Air Force, and trained with B-24 Liberators (the B-17s were sent to Europe). The Group resumed combat operations in Nov 1943 and participated in the Allied offensive through the Gilberts, Marshalls, and Marianas, while operating from Funafuti, Tarawa, and Kwajalein. The Group moved to Guam in Oct 1944.
