A private family graveside will take place in the Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington, Ill.
A celebration of Life service for family and friends will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 25 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla.
Mr. Hopkins (Coach Hopkins to many) was born in Fayette County, Illinois, on September 21, 1928 and was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers, Richard, Lloyd, Robert, David, Quentin, Rex, Ralph, and Gerauld.
He leaves his wife Donna J. (DJ), son Kevin of Champaign, Ill., daughter Karen and husband Roger Burton, of Bement, Ill., son, Steven, of Fairway, Kansas, and daughter, Kelly Hopkins, of St. Louis, Mo., as well as three grandchildren: Michael Burton, Eric Burton, and Nina Hopkins, three great-grandchildren, two brothers: Anthony of Payson, Ariz. and Jesse of Grafton, Ill.; sisters: Hope Coleman of San Diego, Calif. and Linda Drake of Lee's Summit, Mo., brother-in-law, Ron Bauer of Shingle Springs, Calif., and a host of nieces, nephews, good neighbors and dear friends.
Of humble beginnings, Mr. Hopkins valued family and hard work to achieve his dreams. He insisted on integrity and fairness to all. He retired from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation after twenty-nine years of service and prior to that was a basketball, football, and baseball coach in Mexico, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, was a member of the Church of Christ, the American Legion, and past member of the Lions Club International. All his brothers and both brothers-in-law served in the military; eight of them in WWII. He was instrumental in the softball and baseball fields at Lions Club and was the founder of S.I.R. and heavily involved in the youth basketball, baseball, and softball programs in Rolla, Mo. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
