Captain Charles Allen served in the Civil War with Company E, 3rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry as Quartermaster of the Commissary of Subsistence. While stationed at Clarksburg, West Virginia he met and married his wife, Martha Moore on 18 Dec 1861.
According to his wife's request for widows pension found on Fold3, he died 9 Sep 1863 in Clarksburg of dysentery. The names and birth dates of his two children, Ernest Moore Allen and Grace Herrick Allen were also included in the pension papers.
Charles' father Josiah B Allen was a successful merchant in Zanesville, Ohio and his his mother, Martha Frances Herrick was the daughter of Samuel Herrick, a very early settler of Zanesville as well as a former state representative and Brigadier General of the Ohio Militia during the War of 1812.
