He was born on May 24, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Fred graduated from Dominican High School in 1967 and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in finance at UW-Madison.

Fred worked at Eppier Guerin and Turner in Dallas. He loved watching sports, including his hometown teams: the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Wisconsin Badgers. He also grew to appreciate the Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and the Cowboys (when not playing the Packers). He was an avid softball player and winner of many trophies recognizing his athletic accomplishments. Fred was a jokester, known for his fun-loving spirit. He christened those closest to him with affectionate nicknames.

A family memorial service was held on January 13, 2017 in Plano.
