Son of Jacob and Anna Rempel Hoeppner.

Excerpt from Jacob Hoeppner's unpublished memoir about the death of his daughter Anna and son Dietrich:

"After about six years (after marriage), the Lord had blessed us with three children. The daughter (Anna) was four; the son (Dietrich) was two and one-half, and the youngest, (Agnes) was six months old. They were our beloved darlings. Often our parents-in-law said, 'Children, your older daughter will not grow up, she is too intelligent.' Only too soon we should experience this grief. Our children became ill, first the daughter and a day later the son. What we had feared was true; the diagnosis was diptheria. Our daughter died on the fourth day and our son only one day later. Only one who has experienced similarly, could know our deep grief. For me this grief was so great, I didn't think I could bear it. To lay two darlings into a coffin --. But it should be of significance, however. My wife and I accused ourselves that this was God's judgement. We had not lived God-fearing enough, and I acknowledge that to this day. Because of our sad affliction, we had renewed our bond to serve God diligently. My wife and I began to search more for the truth."
