One of the many sad deaths to occur in San Francisco as an aftermath
of the catastrophe was that of Mrs. Jerome Ghiorso, who died on the 25th
in St. Luke's hospital. Ill at the time of the earthquake, her case took
a sudden change for the worse due to the shock. When her husband attempted
to secure a physician he was invariably stopped by a soldier and turned back.
As a last resort the poor woman was carried to St. Luke's hospital, witnessing
horrors that required the strongest nerves to stand. The physicians said she was suffering
from typhoid fever. All that could possibly be done at such a tine and amid such
surrounding proved unavailing. Nor after death was it possible to secure an undertaker,
or even a coffin. So friends assisted the bereaved husband to carry the body
of his beloved bride of a few short months to Laurel Hill cemetery, where they dug
the grave in which to place it. Mrs. Ghiorso was born in Columbia, this county, and
was 19 years of age. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Kroos. She was a daughter of
Mrs. Henry Van de Werdt. Her marriage to Jerome Ghiorso occurred on the 19th of
last December in this city, The Rev. Father Guerin performing the ceremony.
