Oly Matney, age 76, of Grants Pass, OR, died January 12, 2017, at his home.
He was born in Ava, MO in 1940 to Earl Ray & Ella Marie Matney. He was the third of six children (Bill, John, Oly, Janet, Judy, and Joe). His family began farming in Filer, ID, when he was 9 until their move after his
graduation from Filer High School in 1959, for a better life in Sunnyvale, CA.
He began his grocery career where he worked his way to manager of his own store. During this time he served in the United States Army Reserves from 1963-1969.
He had one daughter, Donna (1964), with his first wife, Barbara. He had two sons, Kenneth (1969) & Kevin (1970) with his second wife, Sharon, and with his third wife, Suzie, he had one daughter, Amanda (1986).
Although he enjoyed his time in the retail grocery business, his most gratifying experience was moving to
Grants Pass in 1990, where he was the proud owner/operator of the Shan Creek Market & Deli with his then wife, Suzie.
Oly had a passion for cars from an early age. Over the years he developed a love for NASCAR and began collecting memorabilia of his favorite driver, Tony Stewart. Other interests included tinkering in his shop, gardening, fishing, cooking, and watching Fox News. His most recent joy was spending time with his young grandkids that had a very special love for their Papa.
He moved often over the years, but he finally found a place to call home. He loved his 5 acre slice of heaven with outstanding views of mountains and the city of Grants Pass. He especially enjoyed the wildlife, including the hummingbirds, he lovingly watched outside his kitchen window. From his chair, he had a beautiful view of his large wraparound deck, his mountain and the U.S. flag he proudly flew.
He is survived by his brother, Bill (Beth); his sisters, Janet (Ed)& Judy; his children, Donna, Kevin, and Amanda; his step-children, Michael (Stacy), Tammy (Edwin)& Jennifer; his grandchildren, Angela, Garrett (Kat), Atom, and Gauge.
Oly was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John & Joe; sister-in-law, Helen; and his son, Kenneth.
Oly was a steadfast man of God, a loyal friend, loving father, and amazing Papa. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 10am on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Living Waters Ministries, 1474 Fruitdale Drive, Grants Pass, OR, 97527.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pregnancy Care Center, 714 SE 8th St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or donate securely online at http://www.gppregnancy.co
