Bessie May Luce was born on July 30, 1895, in Lincoln Township, Michigan, to Franklin & Eva Jane (Utman) Luce. They were divorced in 1897, and Bessie would be taken in by Oscar Luce. I believe he was her grandfather’s brother, her great uncle. Her biological father was also adopted, and now, so was she.

Bessie had two sisters, and their whereabouts in 1900 is unknown. They were not with mom and her 2nd husband, Courtland Brownell. The 2 girls were back with mom in 1910, and were adopted by her 3rd husband, George Schwark. All 3 girls, are the biological daughters of Franklin Luce. Who his biological parents were is unknown. More than likely another family member, or close family friend.

Bessie M Luce married Jesse D Roberts in Kalkaska, Michigan, on February 16, 1911, when she was 15 years old. They had one child, Eunice (1913).

Bessie & Jesse were divorced on March 11, 1915, in Grand Traverse, Michigan, after 4 years of marriage.

Bessie M Luce married John M Ireland in Detroit, Michigan, on November 10, 1916, when she was 21 years old.

Bessie & John were divorced on May 28, 1923, in Wayne, Michigan, after 6 years of marriage.

Bessie Ireland married Duane L MacElroy in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, on December 17, 1923, when she was 28 years old.

Bessie & Duane were divorced on October 19, 1931, in Grand Traverse, Michigan, after 7 years of marriage.

Bessie MacElroy married Layman Burkert in Traverse City, Michigan, on November 1, 1931, when she was 36 years old.
