Man slain in Easton had left Florida for an adventure, his stepdad says
By John R. Ellement Globe Staff November 14, 2016
--------------
A few weeks back, Daniel G. Smith told relatives in Florida he was going on a road trip — “kind of an adventure” — with a friend he had met at work, a journey that would give the 35-year-old Easton native a chance to see parts of the country for the first time.
The men were to travel in Smith’s 2016 Mazda 3 and pay for the trip by picking up odd jobs along the way. The tall, wiry Smith was confident his skills as a carpenter, roofer, and office furniture installer would be in demand as they traveled north toward New England, his relatives said.
Smith’s family is now trying to understand how he ended up being fatally wounded near Langwater Pond in Easton, an area he knew well from his childhood, and why his traveling companion is being held in South Carolina, charged with playing some role after Smith was shot Nov. 8.
Michael Arthur Noguera, 47, is in custody, facing charges in Massachusetts of accessory after the fact of murder, armed robbery, and larceny over $250, Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III’s office has said.
Noguera appeared in a South Carolina court Monday and refused to be returned to Massachusetts, leading Bristol County prosecutors to launch the time-consuming process of extraditing him to Massachusetts.
Prosecutors said they would obtain a governor’s warrant to compel his return, a process that could take several weeks.
The investigation is ongoing, Quinn’s office said.
"It’s really baffling right now," Smith’s stepfather, Ronald R. Renshaw, said Monday from his home in Lehigh Acres in Florida." They had been traveling together for maybe five or six weeks. They were pretty much enjoying themselves. And I thought they got along real well. I thought they were friends."
He added, "It was kind of an adventure."
Renshaw said Smith was the youngest of his wife’s three children and lived with them for about four years before moving out on his own a year ago.
"I don’t know how she is making it through it," Renshaw said of his wife, Regina Smith Renshaw. "It’s bad. He was always her baby."
Ronald Renshaw said Noguera also lives in the Lehigh Acres development, but in another part of the sprawling neighborhood. He said he did not know Noguera, except as someone Smith described as a friend who would join him on the road trip with the vague, final destination of Easton where Smith wanted to check in on his elderly, ailing father.
Smith, he said, was a beer drinker who never had an interest in marijuana, had found steady work in Florida over the past five years, and had only recently broken up with a longtime girlfriend.
There was nothing in his stepson’s life to suggest that a trip with a friend would end with Smith being murdered near a spot he often went fishing with his father as a child.
"He was strong and thin, kind of wiry," Renshaw said of Smith, who was 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighed about 160 pounds. "He wasn’t a pushover."
While Massachusetts authorities have been in contact with Smith’s extended family, they have so far not disclosed what led up to Smith’s death.
Investigators continue to search for Smith’s red Mazda 3 sedan with Florida license plate of 372 QQK. Anyone with information is asked to contact Easton police or State Police detectives assigned to Quinn’s office.

Easton native left Florida for a trip home before being murdered
Daniel Gerald Smith Jr. left Florida about a month ago to go on a trip with a new friend. But Smith won't return home - and the friend is now charged in connection with his murder.
EASTON - Daniel Gerald Smith Jr. left Florida about a month ago to go on a trip with a new friend he met at work.
They planned to head north, with no real destination in sight, picking up small carpenter jobs as they went along to earn money.
But Smith will never return home - and the friend he was traveling with is now charged in connection with his murder.
Smith, an Easton native who was most recently living in Florida, was shot in the head at least once on Nov. 8. He died three days later in a Boston hospital.
"He headed up north four or five weeks ago. He was traveling around with this person Michael and they were going different places," Smith's stepfather, Richard Roland Renshaw, told The Enterprise Tuesday from his Florida home. "He knew Michael from a job he was on. He considered him a friend."
Michael Arthur Noguera, 47, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, was arrested in Conway, South Carolina, on Saturday and charged in connection with Smith's murder. He was found in a trailer on Canine Drive after local residents saw his photo posted in a gas station and recognized him. He is charged with accessory to murder after the fact, armed robbery and larceny over $250, but officials haven't said what role he is accused of playing in Smith's death.
"We know he was traveling with Danny in his car, yet when they caught Michael, he didn't have the car. That tells me someone else must be involved," Renshaw said. "We don't know if Michael was the shooter."
Police announced last week that they were seeking a car connected to the fatal shooting - a red 2016 Mazda 3 sedan with Florida license plate tags. It wasn't located with Noguera, but Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn announced on Twitter Tuesday evening that it was located in a motel parking lot in Kenly, North Carolina, and secured.
"That was Dan's car," Renshaw said. "He just bought it earlier this year, it was a 2016."
Smith spent most of his life in the Easton area. He grew up in Brockton, lived in Abington for a short period of time, then moved to Easton and lived in homes on Bay Road and Main Street for years.
One of those houses is next to Langwater Pond, off Pond Street, where Smith was found by two 13-year-old boys riding their bicycles last week unconscious, bleeding and suffering from a gunshot wound.
"He loved to fish. That was his real passion in life - him and his father, both," Renshaw said. "He fished growing up right where he was killed. He knows that area like I know the back of my hand. Fishermen, that's all they do - they walk around the whole pond and spend all day fishing."
Renshaw met Smith's mother, Regina Smith Renshaw, about 14 years ago and knew Smith well since then. Smith moved to Florida about five years ago and lived with his mother and Renshaw on and off.
"He's a real momma's boy. He was like a miracle baby. She had two children when she met Dan's father and they really wanted to have a baby, so they had to do a reversal on her," Renshaw said. "They considered it high risk, but she got pregnant with Danny. He was her baby. It's really tough on her."
Friends said Smith attended Oliver Ames High School in Easton and was scheduled to graduate in 1999, but Principal Wes Paul said there is no record of a Daniel Smith attending or graduating from the school around that time.
Jennifer Tomasian, a longtime friend, went to school with Smith and kept in touch in recent years.
"He was a nice kid, would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it," she said. "He had an amazing sense of humor and was always making people laugh. I saw him not too long ago and, of course, he had that big smile and a hug waiting for me. To go so violently, it's horribly, horribly heartbreaking."
Smith visited his father, who is suffering from dementia and lives at a housing authority property, in Easton last week, just days before he was killed. He was named after his father - Daniel Gerald Smith.
"He was a very, very vicarious, outgoing person," Renshaw said. "He would talk to anyone, at any time, at any place, over anything - that's just how he was. He was always there to help somebody, first thing."
Noguera is being held without bail in South Carolina and is fighting extradition. The Bristol County district attorney's office has begun a process to obtain a governor's warrant to return Noguera to Massachusetts to face charges related to Smith's murder, which was the first homicide and non-accidental shooting in Easton since May 2011.
The district attorney's office said Tuesday evening that the investigation is still "very active," declining further comment.
"It's been very difficult for us," Renshaw said. "I'll be anxious to go to the trial and see the suspect's face."
