Gerald Dean Gander

Gerald Dean Gander, age 82, of Shelbyville, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at the Clarence Care Center, in Clarence, MO.

Gerald was born June 5, 1934, in Shelbyville, MO, the son of William Frances and Ethel Louise Williams Gander. He married Shirley Marie Holloway on June 6, 1959. She preceded him on death July 23, 1982. He later married Katherine Stock on July 2, 1983 in Shelbyville, MO. She survives.

He is survived by four children; Raymond Joseph Gander of Shelbyville, MO, Russell Louis Gander of Macon, MO, Elizabeth Ann Drebenstedt and husband Brent of Shelbyville, MO, and Howard Wesley Gander and wife Erin of Shelbyville, MO; five grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Bate and husband Brandon, Jacob Wade Gander, Katlyn Mae Drebenstedt, Kyle Dean Drebenstedt, and Ryann Louise Gander; two step daughters, Stefanie Engelbrecht Wickers and husband Ron, and Sara Denise Engelbrecht Payne; two brothers, Maynard Gander and wife Bertha of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and David Gander of Montreal, MO; two sisters-in-law, Ursula Gander and Lora Beth Gander; two brothers-in-law, John Holloway and Jimmie Gander; and his dog, Buddy.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William Gander, James Gander, and Kenneth Gander; one sister, Thelma Ruth; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Gander and Mae Gander.

Gerald was a Christian by faith. He served his country in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. He belonged to the Northeast Missouri Police Association, and was a lifetime member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Retired MO Sheriffs Association, American Legion, and VFW. He loved outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. He was also an avid gunsmith. He served 16 years from 1980 to 1996 as Sheriff of Shelby County and was proud of his service to the county. He shared his love of hunting with his children and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 10 am at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, MO. Visitation will be Friday, January 20, 2017 from 3pm to 8pm at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Shelby Memorial Cemetery or Clarence Care Center.
