YORKTOWN - Lorene Ledford Neville died at her home on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017. She was a native of Clay County, N.C., and a Yorktown resident since 1980. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother and a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church.

Lorene is survived by her husband of 52 years, Walter H. Neville; children, Richard Neville (Helen) of Surry County, Va., Steve Neville (Jennifer) of York County, Linda Wyman of Sterling, Mass., and Douglas Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Aaron Wyman, Robin Van Pelt, and Benjamin, all of Washington, D.C., Susan of Hattiesburg, Miss., Andrew, Olivia, Philip, Laura and Amy Neville, all of Surry County, Christine of Philadelphia, Pa., Joel of York County and Adelaide Neville of Hampton, Va.; and three great-grandsons, Joshua, Jacob and Jack Van Pelt, all of Wilmington, N.C.

Lorene was a member of the Presbyterian Church (USA) for most of her life; and in York County, she was a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, where her service included Sunday school work. Lorene loved York County and fishing in the York River. She volunteered to work with the Bargain Box in York County.

Lorene loved reading and understanding history and politics. She volunteered with the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA) and served as a docent at Jamestown Church. Lorene was a member of the Newport News – Warwick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Newport News.

She enjoyed being a member of her book club. She loved knitting and gardening. She made hats, mittens, socks and scarves for her grandchildren. She grew varieties of fruits and vegetables that she had enjoyed as she grew up in the mountains of North Carolina. Lorene liked the outdoors, the Appalachian Mountains and Appalachian culture.

Lorene was a medical laboratory technician certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She had worked for the Veterans Administration and the U.S. Army. She retired from Riverside Hospital in 1999.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the Yorkminster Presbyterian Church for their support and prayers as we cared for Lorene. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, in Pineview Cemetery, Rocky Mount, N.C. The Rev. Mark Jernigan of Yorkminster PCUSA will officiate.
