In 1966 Percy Nettles was one of eight the founding members of the Flashing Feathers Bow Hunters Club.
The clubs stated purpose was “to provide an organized bow hunting club devoted to the development of skillful and competent bow hunting techniques” and “to help provide for a cooperative hunter/landowner relationship through abetter understanding of conservation, sportsmanship and education.” This committmet to education and conservation has led them to be involved in many notable activities The group was directly involved with the development of the New York State Bow Hunter Education Course.Through affiliation with the New York Field Archer’s Association, the organization was involved with early legislation concerning bow hunting in New York State. As a result of this relationship, the organization became known as the New York Field Archers and Bow Hunters Association. The Flashing Feathers Bow Hunters Club is a member of the Tompkins County Federation of Sporting Clubs and continues to be involved in legislation on the grassroots level through the New York State Conservation Council. The club conceived the New York State Whitetail Deer Forum and Big Game Classic, which began at the old fire house in Newfield in 1985, and completed its run in 1997 after gracing such venues as the New York State Armory in Ithaca and the Treadway Inn in Owego. The club has been involved in the 4-H shooting sports program as well as the National Hunting and Fishing Days The club supports the New York State Department of Conservation “ Kids to Camp” program by sponsoring as many as nine young adults each year to attend a week-long conservation camp. The emphasis on ethical bow hunting s kills and techniques has produced a membership with an impressive record.
