FUTRELL, LASSIE PHOEBE KING, – age 84, a resident of Coalfield, maker of the world’s greatest stack fruit cakes and fried apple pies, passed away July 5, 2000 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following an extended illness. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and housewife who took great pleasure in her family and in feeding all those who came to her home. Survivors: sons, Rev. Edward (Tommy) Futrell and wife Roberta of Johnson City, Billy Joe Futrell of Coalfield, Terry Futrell and wife Marsha Futrell of Oakdale; daughters, Barbara Poland and husband Franklin (Buddy) Poland of Spring City, Margaret Rather and husband James of Oliver Springs, Sue Barber and husband Gilbert of Anniston, Alabama; 13 grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; sister, Cleda Lankford of Harriman; she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Futrell was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Lewis Futrell; and son Kenneth Lloyd Futrell. Burial at Roane Memorial Gardens. [Knoxville News Sentinel]
