Ida A. Polito, 99 years' young, of Munster and Hammond, IN passed away and into the Lord's hands on Monday, January 16, 2017. Ida leaves to cherish her memories her sister, Mary C. (late, Edward) Toth, and her loving nieces and nephews: Annette (David) Halfman, Charles (Ruth) Polito, Linda Jones, Judy (Phil) Nelson, Janice (Geoff) Chipps, Joanne Jones, J. Christopher (Ann) Jones, Mark (Lura) Toth, Barbarajean (George) Trinidad, Mary Margaret (Ron Johnson) Frick, Thomas (Pam) Toth, Margie Polito, Cath Polito, Christopher (Marjorie) Polito, August Gerard (Carol) Polito and a host of great and great great nieces and nephews. Ida was born on February 27, 1917. She was preceded in death by parents August A. Polito and Barbara (Rinella) Polito; brothers and sisters, August A. (Constance) Polito; Frances Polito; Josephine (Richmond) Jones; Salvador Polito; Louis J. (Mary) Polito; niece, Barbara Ann (Kenneth) Hein and nephew, James C. Jones. Ida was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. She touched many lives with her kind and giving spirit, Ida's life was exemplified by her participation and support of others, as well as the many organizations to which she devoted her time and energies. We are all better for having known Ida. Ida was a life-long member of St. Joseph Church, Hammond; a graduate of St. Joseph's School, 1931, a Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Presently a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Dyer, IN. Ida was the oldest-known living graduate on record of Catholic Central (Bishop Noll), graduating in 1935. In September 2015, Bishop Noll Institute bestowed the honor of inducting Ida into the BNI Hall of Honor for her life-long commitment and generosity to Bishop Noll. Ida was employed as General Manager of Chapman Service Laundry in Hammond with 57 years of employment. Ida was a founding member of Beta Chapter, Pi Epsilon Kappa Catholic Sorority, of which she was an active member over 70 years. She volunteered at St. Margaret Hospital Hammond over 4,500 hours. Ida served as a mentor for S.C.0.R.E. (Senior Core of Retired Executives). A member of NCSF/ Foresters, St. Joseph Court 513, and an active supporter of Hammond Education Foundation. Ida was an extensive traveler throughout the U. S., Canada, Europe, Asia, South America, Central America, Africa and several Caribbean cruises. In the 70's Ida chaperoned the Show Teens on their tours of Europe. When through one woman - a little more love and goodness, a little more light and truth come into the world then that woman's life has had meaning. Ida's family is grateful for the loving care at Hartsfield Village and the devoted care of the Visiting Angels in Ida's last months. Visitation will be Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Kish Funeral Home 8415 Calumet Ave., Munster IN 46321 (219-836-5000). A mass of Christlan burial will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Maria Goretti Church, 500 Northgate Dr., Dyer, IN 46311 at 10:00 a.m., with Fr. Charles Niblick officiating. Visitation with the family, at the church at 9:30 a.m., immediately prior to the time of the funeral mass. Interment will be at St. John - St. Joseph Cemetery, Hammond, IN.
