In April 1870 the Brooklyn part of the Metropolitan PD became the newly resurrected Brooklyn Police Department. Promotions followed until in 1898 when Brooklyn was annexed to the Greater City of New York with the police department consolidated into the NYPD and Mackellar became the Deputy Chief in charge of Brooklyn. But political stepped in and he was moved to the Borough of Queens for a year before returning to Brooklyn until his passing at the age of fifty-eight.
