She was a 1958 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg and a 1962 graduate of Catawba College of Salisbury, N.C. She did post graduate at Wake Forest University and completed her master's degree at Shippensburg University. Mrs. Swailes began her teaching career at West Snyder School District, Beaver Springs, Pa. and taught one year in Greencastle School District. She was a science teacher for 36 years at James Buchanan Middle School and retired in 1999.
Mitzi and her husband loved to camp and travel in their VW camper known as Wild Nest. They camped in 49 states and traveled to Hawaii for a niece's wedding in 2004. She visited all the Canadian provinces, Mexico, Europe, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, and South America. Her favorite destination was the Outer Banks of North Carolina where she and her husband owned a retirement home. There was not an antique store that she did not appreciate.
She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Mercersburg. Other memberships include: Mercersburg Women's Club, Women of the Moose, charter director of Tuscarora Wildlife Education Program, PSEA, NEA and National Science Teachers Association.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William M. "Bub" Swailes, whom she married November 22, 1967; a daughter, Jami M. McCall of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and a son, Billie J. Swailes of Mercersburg; two grandchildren, Owen P. and Miles X. McCall, both of Kill Devil Hills; a brother, James C. Zeger of Mercersburg. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis A. Zeger and Lawrence C. Zeger, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, December 7th, in Trinity United Church of Christ, Mercersburg, with Reverend Clark Hock officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg. There will be no viewing however the family will receive friends one hour prior to the services in the church.
The family requests the omission of flowers. Contributions may be made to TWEP, 4881 Ft. Loudon Road, Mercersburg, Pa. 17236 or Hospice of the Good Shepard, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
