Mr. James Wardie Nance, 91, Lebanon, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Parkwood Health Care Center, Lebanon, of natural causes following an extended illness.

Mr. Nance was born in Boone County west of Mechanicsburg on Feb. 24, 1918, the son of the late Wardie Harvey and Lula Grace (Engle) Nance.

He was reared and educated in Boone County where he lived most of his life. He attended Washington Township School and Lebanon High School.

His first marriage was in 1934 to Juanita Maude (Emmert) Nance who is deceased. He was married in Hagerstown on February 21, 1947, to Wahneita Marcella (Lannerd) Nance. Mrs. Nance died on April 11, 1986. He was married on Jan. 24, 1987, in Boone County to Helen Caldwell Cox and she is deceased.

In Boone County he farmed and in Lebanon he had worked at the Hicks Body Company. He then was an employee at Delco Remy in Anderson and National Homes in Lafayette. Mr. Nance resided in Albuquerque, N.M. 1960-1983, and worked as an assistant manager several years in a mobile home park. Then he was in maintenance and an assistant superintendent of a liquid waste and sewer plant until he retired in December 1979. The city honored him for his years of service by declaring December 20, 1979 "Jim Nance Day."

He took pride in his family and enjoyed steam engine and railroad models. Mr. Nance often reminisced about hopping a train as a young man. He also had owned a replica of a train that could carry passengers. He also had a replica of a steam thrashing machine which he enjoyed riding. The family was often entertained with stories of the "old days" as he recalled his grandpa's sorghum factory in Mechanicsburg. Until recently, he traveled having made numerous trips through the western United States.

Survivors include children Mr. William M. Nance and wife, Diana, Coatesville, Mr. James H. Nance and wife, Sue, Lebanon and Mrs. Betty Ann Childress and husband, Dick, Lebanon; step-children Mrs. Patricia Smith and husband, Ronnie, Lafayette, Mr. Dale L. Stamps, Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren Kimberly, Jim, Jamie, Romey, Roanna, Mark, Elizabeth, Christina, Bill, David, Cindy, Michelle, Lisa, Matthew, Janet, Allison and Kevin; 32 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. In addition to his parents and wives, an infant daughter, Janie Nance is deceased.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon, where services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Pastor Jack Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lebanon.
