Catharine Stanton Lewis, 96, passed away at Sylvia’s Hospice House on 1/17/17. She was born Nov. 29, 1920, in Sanford, NC, to Charles Harmon Stanton and Mary Gonella Stanton. A native of Wilmington, NC, Catharine graduated at age 19 with a degree in Music Education from Women’s College of North Carolina, today UNC-Greensboro. At her first teaching job in Whiteville, NC, she met the love of her life, Rone Howell Lewis, Jr. They were married on May 26, 1942, before he shipped overseas to England as an Army Air Corps Navigator-Bombardier. During World War II, Catharine went to work in administration for the Army Corps of Engineers.
An Air Force wife and mother for their first 28 years, Catharine and Rone were happily married for over 72 years. She traveled the United States and the world supporting her husband’s military career. They raised their family at Air Force locations in New Mexico, Texas, California, Kansas, Florida, Maine and Germany. She was always involved with their church, teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, playing the piano and organ.
After her husband retired from the Air Force in 1969, she returned to teaching in Elementary Schools in Homestead, FL, for 12 years. She and her husband enjoyed years of boating and fishing in the Florida Keys with children and grandchildren, as well as taking her young students on boating trips. She gave years of piano lessons to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Catharine and Rone moved to Ocala in July 1993. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Ocala, and the Friendly Fellowship Sunday School Class. She and her husband were active in The Retired Military Officers Association.
Survivors are sons Rone Howell Lewis, III (Fran) of Basking Ridge, NJ; Harmon Stanton Lewis (Linda) of Ocala and daughter Margaret Lewis Chambless of Wilmington, NC and Ocala; 6 grandchildren Cristina Padron (Carlos), David Lewis (Stacy), USAF Col. Harmon Lewis, Jr. (Andrea), Leslie Tyson (Tim), Will Chambless, Josh Chambless (Lynda); 14 great grandchildren; 9 nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and a host of great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband.
A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of First United Methodist Church of Ocala at 10:00 AM on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017.
Mrs. Lewis will be cremated and then buried in the Lewis Family plot in Whiteville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, 51 Children’s Way, Enterprise, Florida 32725.
Arrangements are being handled by Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services.
