Merritt S. Carlson, Jr., was born on June 11, 1926 in Sioux City, Iowa to Merritt and Esther Carlson. He attended the public schools in Sioux City, graduating from Central High.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippine Islands and was with the first troops to enter in the Occupation of Japan.
He graduated from St. Louis University in 1950. Upon graduation, he was employed by the American Automobile Insurance Company in Houston, Texas and Des Moines, Iowa.He attended Graduate School at the University of Iowa. On August 14, 1965 he married Gladys Clabaugh at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa.
He was employed as an instructor at Marshalltown Community College, Des Moines Area Community College and Western Wisconsin Technical College. He also was self-employed as a Certified Public Accountant and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and Gladys retired in 1993 and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado.
Survivors include his wife Gladys; daughter, Tammy (Peter) Kisken of La Crosse, Wisconsin; son Martin (Teresa) Carlson of Statesville, North Carolina; two sisters, C. Joyce Strahan of Arcata, California and Joan (Harold) McDermott of Sioux City, Iowa; two granddaughters, Adeline and Madalyn and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held beginning at 9:30 AM Monday, February, 23, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at the church. Following a brief luncheon at the church, interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Pallbearers will be Chris Howard, John Howard, Scott Howard, Peter Kisken, Matthew McDermott and Michael McDermott.
Merritt's wife is grateful to Columbine West Care Center and Pathways Hospice who helped make his last days more comfortable.
