NAUGATUCK – Retired United States Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. James Paul “Top” Allen, 83, died suddenly Jan. 13, 2017 at his home in Naugatuck. He was the widower of Lena (DuBose) Allen.
Mr. Allen was born Jan. 5, 1934 in Briceville Fla., son of the late John Allen and Marie (Jackson) Allen. He served his entire career as a United States Marine, retiring with the rank of master gunnery sergeant,then as New England head of recruiting for the Marine Corps. He was a member of the Naugatuck Veterans Council.
Mr. Allen was also a member of the Western Connecticut Officials Association. He was a referee in basketball and football and an umpire in baseball.

He is survived by his son, James Fredrick Allen of Naugatuck, brothers, Joseph Allen of Orlando, Fla., Enoch Allen of Titusville, Fla., George T. Allen of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Chanté D. Allen and James Marcus Allen, of Waterbury and Isaiah D. Allen, of Troy, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren; his niece Lilly Riddick of Waterbury, nephew Vernon Barber of Tallahassee, Fla., nephew Dwight Barber and his wife Debra, of Lawtey Fla.; and sister-in-law Nancy DuBose Knighton, of New London; and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers Isaac, Richard, Walter and Samuel L. Allen; his sisters Martha Jenkins, Maggie Allen Murphy, Ruth Barbar, Mary Davis and Esther Allen; mother- in-law Fern DuBose and brother-in-law Charles Douglas DuBose.

Arrangements: Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Kelly-Brennan Funeral Home, 768 Baldwin St., Waterbury. Burial with full military honors will follow in State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, Conn.

Calling hours will be held at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. The Naugatuck Veterans Council will meet at 6:30 p.m.
