Oscar Humberto Guerra, of Houston, age 97, died on December 3, 2016. He was born June 20, 1919, in Hidalgo, Texas to Roque Guerra Sr. and Rafaela Moraida Guerra. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Oscar grew up in Hidalgo, Texas, where he was the valedictorian for the graduating class of 1936 of Hidalgo High School. He graduated from Edinburgh Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree in 1938. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas in Austin in 1940, with a major in government and a minor in economics. From 1941 to 1970 he held posts in the U.S. State Department as a diplomatic and consular officer in Washington DC and Foreign Service posts in Nicaragua, Panama, Argentina, Cuba, Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Canada. From 1944 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy, where he was assigned to the communications office in the Panama Canal Zone. He became a Lieutenant junior grade in the post-war U.S. Naval Reserve. From 1973 to 1993 he worked for Shell Oil Company managing several company owned retail outlets in Houston. In his later years he was active in the London Townhomes Homeowners Association in west Houston.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 66 years, Mary Jane Anderson Guerra, his brothers Ruben Guerra and Roque Guerra Jr, and his sisters, Ida Guerra Diaz and Hilda Guerra Whitmyre. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Karen Guerra of Houston, his daughter, Lynne Erdek of Austin, his granddaughter and her husband, Sara and Chad Stone of Londonderry, New Hampshire, and his great-grandson and granddaughter, Richard and Bella Stone of Londonderry, New Hampshire, and numerous nieces and nephews.
His family is grateful for the loving care given to Oscar by the staff of Brookdale Ellington Field and Brookdale Hospice.
The service honoring Oscar’s life will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, December 10, 2016, at Niday Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
