Scott Jon Sloan, age 69 of Sewanee, passed away January 12, 2017. Born November 22, 1947 in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Dr. George Solomon and Lillian Berger Solomon. He passed away peacefully at Sewanee Hospital following a lengthy illness. He faced the cancer and the treatments bravely as a soldier, and compared the cancer with his service in Vietnam. After graduating from The C.W. Post College of Long Island University, Scott served in the United States Army, serving three campaigns in Vietnam as a Combat Infantryman and Combat Medic. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the Vietnamese Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Good conduct Medal, just to name a few of his decorations. He held a Master’s Degree from Middle Tennessee State University and a Master of Arts in Theology from the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. He was with the pharmaceutical division of 3M and Bristol Myers and had a second career teaching with the Hamilton County Board of Education and was a classroom teacher at Grundy County High School, teaching government and French. Scott was an outgoing, friendly and caring person who enjoyed reading, hiking and history. He had a lifelong love of learning and was a volunteer Ranger at the South Cumberland Ranger Station. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Virginia Beard Sloan; sister, Robin (Arnold) Kanarek of Devon, England; brothers, Michael (Ruth) Sloan of Charleston, SC and Steven (Roberta) Sloan of Los Angeles, CA; and his beloved cats, Jack, Micky and Minerva. The life of Scott Jon Sloan will be celebrated on Sunday January 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the St. Luke’s Chapel in Sewanee with Rev. David Kearley and the Rev. Linda Hutton officiating. Interment will follow at the University Cemetery with military honors. Following the interment, a reception will be hosted at St. James Episcopal Church, 898 Midway Rd., Sewanee 37375.
