Donna Jean Lowery, loving daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, of Ann Arbor, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her mother by her side. Born on January 5, 1988, in Marquette, Michigan, she is the daughter of Mortimer Lowery and Julie Ann (Dairo).

Donna worked as a counselor for the Disability Network Capital Area, formerly known as Capital Area Community of Independent Living for many years to create independent living for people with disabilities. She was a huge advocate to foster independent living, employment, and education for people with disabilities. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Family and Children’s Service Counseling with a minor in Substance Abuse counseling from Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI. She was in the process of earning her Master’s degree from Siena Heights as a Clinical Counselor for Family and Children. She was a nanny for children from the time she was 17.

Donna’s gifts and talents allowed her to help many people of all ages. She served as a mentor for teenagers who were going through difficult times and assisted in the development of Beyond Our Barriers, a marketing tool for people with disabilities to obtain employment in the Lansing Area. Her strength and bravery was profound, as she never complained about her fight with cancer and was always the first person willing to assist others. Those that knew Donna would agree she was the strongest, bravest, most kind-hearted, and giving person they knew, with a smile that didn’t stop.

When Donna wasn’t pouring herself into helping others, she loved dancing, specifically tap dancing, and painting art. Donna was very family and friend oriented. She was godmother to her nephew, Brooks, who she loved with all her heart, along with Finley one of her best friend’s children. She would spread joy and love with her smile and personality and was selfless in giving to those that needed assistance and guidance. She will be dearly missed by all the lives she touched.

Donna is survived by her loving parents, Julie (Dairo) Lowery and Mortimer Lowery; brothers, John (Kathy Ray), Micheal (Emily Gebhardt) and two nephews, Brooks, who brought her lots of joy and smiles, and her future nephew, Seth. Donna is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She is also survived by pet-nieces and nephews, Boss, Ma Petite, Hazel, and Bowser.

A memorial service will be held on January 28, 2017, at 11:00am at the Marquette Bible Church in Marquette, MI followed by a Celebration of Life from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Ore Dock Brewing in Marquette, Michigan, which friends are encouraged to bring their stories to share.

Donna wanted to continue her legacy of assisting people and providing scholarships to students with disabilities, therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Donna Jean Lowery Scholarship Fund.
