Stephen Kent Shelton was born on October 3, 1950, to Kent and Dorothy (Chambers) Shelton. He grew up in Columbia, MO in a loving family, the oldest of four siblings. His lifelong love of sports, especially Mizzou Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, began at age six when his dad took him to Mizzou football and basketball games. He played baseball and often said the best time of his life was when his little league team made it to regionals at age twelve. He also played tennis and racquetball for many years. In 1972, Steve graduated magna cum laude from the University of Missouri, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He then passed the CPA exam and went to work for the public accounting firm, Arthur Young and Company. Later, he worked for Coca-Cola, Consolidated Aluminum, and True Manufacturing, where he spent 27 years, retiring in 2014. Steve met his wife Ruth (Withrow) when they were high school sweethearts at Columbia Hickman High School. After his graduation from college, they married on June 3, 1972. They had a son, Matt, and a daughter, Stephanie, before settling in St. Charles, MO. After a hard fought battle with pancreatic cancer, Steve passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son Matt and his wife Angie (Miller) Shelton and their three children Luke, Alex, and Liam; daughter Stephanie Miller and her son Zack; brother Scott and his wife Linda (Wehmeyer) Shelton; sister Pam Robb and her husband Will; and sister Janet Shelton.
