Cecil "Sid" Brotherton, 81, passed away Jan. 9, 2017, at his home on Long Lake near Aitkin, from cancer. Sid was born Jan. 23, 1935, in Modale, Iowa, the son of Pauline and Corbett Brotherton. They moved to Dunlap, Iowa in 1940 and then to Bemidji, Northern Township, in 1944. In 1945, he moved 10 miles north of Bemidji, where his parents owned a repair shop and resort on Little Turtle Lake. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1952. He worked as a welder in Bemidji and also worked in the mines at Keewatin.

He entered the U.S. Army in October of 1954 and served until October of 1956. He attended eight weeks of wheel vehicle mechanics school and then 10 weeks of track vehicle mechanics. He served the remaining tour at Ellsworth Air Force Base where he achieved the rank of SP 3rd Class. His duties were acting motor sergeant for C Company and battalion welder.

He married Jean Saddler June 24, 1956, at Puposky. They lived in Rapid City, S.D. until October 1956, when they moved to Minneapolis. He started working for Northern Ordinance Inc. in December of 1956 as a detailer and draftsman and other various duties in the test department. He tested ordinance equipment such as Navy ship mounted guns and missile launchers. Sid attended night school of engineering at the University of Minnesota, taking math-related courses totaling 20 credits. He then went to work at Northern Pump and in 1963 he went to work at Timesavers Inc. in Crystal. During his years there, he worked as a designer, project engineer, senior project engineer, engineering manager and an assistant chief engineer. He retired in 1995.

In 1995, they moved to Long Lake near Aitkin and built their retirement home and had resided here since. He had many hobbies, which included making honey as a beekeeper, tapping trees and making maple syrup, cutting trees and making his own lumber on his sawmill, woodworking and hunting.

Sid is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Debbie (Emmy) Yates, son, Mitch (Jan) Brotherton; grandchildren, E.J. (Kristy), Brenden and Chelsea (Chris); and great-grandchildren, McKayla and Cameron.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Corbett and Pauline.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with the Rev. Rick Perry and the Rev. Sandy Berg Holte officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at a later date. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts.
