Shelby was born January 6, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana and resided there until 1941 when his father’s business requirements moved the family to Sao Paulo, Brazil. He lived in Brazil until 1948 when he returned to the United States to attend high school at St. Stanislaus in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and then Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.

Upon graduation from college with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a minor in Economics, Shelby moved to New Orleans for work. There, a mutual friend introduced him to Patricia A. Verhulst of Independence, Missouri who was visiting New Orleans. A year later, Shelby arranged for a job transfer to the Kansas City area where he and Patricia were married in 1960. They moved to their current Overland Park address in 1964.

Shelby was employed in the banking business in Johnson County, Kansas for 38 years until his retirement in 1998 at the age of 63. His initial 25 years, starting in 1960, were at the former Johnson County National Bank and Trust Company in Prairie Village, Kansas where he reached the position of Sr. Vice President. His later years in banking were at the former First Continental Bank and The Mission Bank. During his working years, Shelby was involved with and supported many civic and philanthropic organizations and causes which he believed would enhance the quality of life in his community.

During his retirement years, Shelby and Patricia spent their winter months at their Fort Lauderdale, Florida condominium from where they were able to enjoy many ocean cruises as they explored the Caribbean, Central America and northern South America. In the summer months they cruised Alaska and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Shelby’s greatest joy was his family and the many hours they spent together. He and Patricia were blessed with four daughters whom they instilled with a sense of love and family. He truly loved and appreciated all of the gatherings and many other events he shared with his daughters and their families.

Besides his wife Patricia, Shelby leaves behind his daughters Janet A. Newhouse (Michael), Elaine S. Schwing (William) and Jill P. Pittman (David) all of Johnson County, Kansas and Amy M. Kosnick (Terry) of Eagan, Minnesota. He also leaves six grandchildren: Mitchell D. Newhouse, Mallory A. Newhouse, Addison C. Pittman, Samuel R. Pittman, Mia V. Kosnick and Sabina M. Kosnick. In addition, Shelby leaves his sister, Sondra C. St.Martin of Pompano Beach, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, Shelby suggests memorial contributions to John Paul II Catholic School, 6915 W 71st Street, Overland Park, KS 66204 or a charity of your choice.
