Billie Harriet Pons Curtis, 87, of Valdese, died peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at her residence, following a period of declining health.

Billie was born March 12, 1929, in Hickory, NC, to the late Silvio R. Pons and Maude Jones Pons.

Mrs. Curtis was a graduate of Francis Garrou High School in Valdese, NC. She married TJ Curtis in 1949 and lived to celebrate her 66th wedding anniversary with her best friend and love of her life. She began her married life in Glen Alpine, where she was an active member of the church and local community. Her faith and church were the cornerstone of her life, marriage and family.

Billie served as a deputy of the register of deeds in Burke County for a number of years under the registrar Alvin Berry and Boger McGimsey. She joined Alba-Waldensian in 1973, where she was employed in the personnel department and retired in 1981 to help care for her ailing mother.

Billie attended the Glen Alpine Methodist Church , the W. B. Culp Sunday School Class and was a charter member of the Glen Alpine Women's Club. She assisted with local church, school, and community events, with a dedicated heart of a servant leader behind the scenes.

Billie moved to Valdese in 1972, where she became a beloved member of Valdese First Methodist Church and continued to combine faith and works in a lifetime of nurturing, witness, discipleship, outreach and mission activities. She believed in living her life as a "good and faithful servant" for her Lord, Jesus Christ and her God.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Tillman Curtis; sisters Marie Mullins and Sylby Martinat; and brothers, John C. Pons and Frank H. Pons.

Billie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and delighted in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.

Graveside Services for Billie Harriet Pons Curtis will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Burke Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. Jeffery A. Sweeney officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Memorials may be made to the Valdese First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 637,Valdese, NC 28690 or Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690.
